Behind the Sandstone: Hidden Stories of Sacrifice contains stories of the 73 men buried in the Newcastle War Cemetery at Sandgate between 1942 and 1947. With interesting supporting material from a variety of sources they reveal Newcastle’s contribution to the war effort, which is expanded in the section ‘Fortress Newcastle’. The cemetery’s history is told and is illustrated by rarely seen photographs.
The Hunter Valley Commonwealth War Cemeteries at Greta, (East) Maitland and Muswellbrook are also described and illustrated.
Interesting information about four Commonwealth War Cemeteries of Hooge Crater, Belgium; Kranji, Singapore; Kanchanaburi, Thailand; and Fort Massey, Canada is included.
