Description

Confined but Free! The Female Staff of Maitland Gaol in the 19th Century focuses on the female staff who worked at Maitland Gaol during the 19th century. The book was written by Pam Harrison and was originally available for sale at Maitland Gaol in the Hunter Valley region.

Much interest is shown in the female convicts in NSW but the female warders and matrons who supervised the lives of convicts in Maitland Gaol have received little attention. These women committed no crimes but their strict employment terms confined them to the gaol almost like prisoners. Dr Harrison’s publication uncovers many largely forgotten stories and details a chronological account of the working conditions of the female staff during the 19th century who operated in a highly challenging environment, navigating overcrowding, sanitation issues and the intense psychological toll of guarding. Individual biographies of the staff are included in the publication.

The publication is only available in book form.
