This burial ground was located in the Newcastle suburb of North Waratah, now Mayfield, and is one of Newcastle’s ‘lost’ cemeteries. The stones were removed and the ground cleared many decades ago. The area around the cemetery was colloquially and locally known as Platt’s Folly or The Folly.
To recreate a list of burials that occurred in this cemetery, restricted permission was gained to access death registers held in 1990s in the NSW BDM Newcastle Office. Permission to extract certain information (viz. Surname/Given Name, Date of Death, Age and Death, Spouse or Parents (but not both) and in cases where neither of the last two was entered (usually ‘unknown’) birthplace of the deceased could be noted if it was recorded.) was given.
Any inconsistencies between NSW death registrations and burial records or memorials that were identified were noted and were recorded in the publication.
Despite the best endeavours of researchers, they could not identify all interments in the burial ground. Lack of records, non-registration, the occasional clandestine burial of which some evidence is to be found all contribute to these losses.
The burials are indexed and supplementary material from newspapers or from other locations is included.
