In Person
Both members and non-members are welcome to visit the Society’s Library (see opening hours) to carry out their family history research. Volunteers are on duty to assist in your research.
Non-members pay a fee of $5 on Thursday afternoons or $10 for the full day on Saturdays. The Library offers a wide range of resources from books and maps to microfiche, microfilm and CDs. Free WiFi and access to Find My Past resources are provided.
If intending to use a USB or portable hard-drives for Personal storage of NFHS resources or records, please remember that Copyright must always be observed, and please advise the volunteer librarian of your plans.
Disabled access to the building is behind our building in DeVitre Street via the driveway beside Meals on Wheels. If this access is required, please contact us by phone on (02 4957 8296) during our opening hours to ensure that there are no temporary issues that may cause a difficulty. We do have disabled toilet facilities.
Our amenities include provision for tea or coffee making, a small fridge and a microwave, so you can bring your lunch if you are planning a full day’s visit.
Research Service
If you are unable to attend our Library to carry out your own research, a Research Service is available.
Research is undertaken by volunteers who will take note of your request and advise whether the Society has relevant information.
Research Fees:
$30 for the first hour, $20.00 per additional hour

Paying by Credit Card/Cash: available in NFHS rooms.

For that initial fee of $30, the enquirer would receive:
- a generous one-hour search of our files and other holdings
- publication of the request in our quarterly Journal, reaching over 250 members as well as other Societies with whom we exchange Journals
- filing of your request and our findings in the Society’s Research records for use by researchers with the possibility of future contact.
Further research if requested would require payment of $20 per hour, so the enquirer has complete control over the time and cost involved.
A Research request form is available (see below) to download or simply send an email requesting assistance to the Research Team at [email protected] outlining as much information as possible as well as resources already examined to avoid loss of time in searching material already covered.
