This publication was originally printed in December 1929 as a Souvenir to mark Civic Week and to celebrate the completion of Newcastle City’s Town Hall. It was prepared by the Newcastle Civic Week Committee on behalf of the City of Newcastle Council. While Newcastle City was declared a Municipality in 1859, other equivalent suburban municipalities were established over the period from 1871 to 1887 and the book provides an extensively illustrated snapshot of the whole city at a point in time when suburban local government still held sway. The first half of the book contains detailed documentation of the various facets of the city and the second half is a reproduction of numerous advertisements which paid for the original production. This was a period when Newcastle boasted a large manufacturing base where electrical items were actually manufactured.
The 2007 reproduction has a new table of contents that gives an indication of the scope of the book in which many aspects of life and services in Newcastle are documented.
The 2007 reproduction has a comprehensive index listing the names of those who played an important role in the development of local government and industry.
